Mating with Alexandra multiple times satisfied my instinctual needs enough to allow me to hold her throughout the night without taking her again. Still, I slept very little. Short, intermittent pockets of rest from which I roused each time she shifted position or made a noise. Is that how it will always be while sharing a bed? Only time will tell. I have no one to ask.

My parents have been gone so long, I hardly recall their voices. Dwelling on loss and loneliness is not something I do often. There’s no value in it, only silent misery.

With Alexandra asleep in our bed upstairs, though, I can’t help wondering what my parents would think of this forbidden union between their only offspring and a human. Alexandra and I have much to learn and many obstacles to overcome. Even so, I have a future to look forward to. A fuller life because of my mate. For that, I think my parents would be happy.

Armed with supplies to repair the broken window, I enter the house and freeze on the spot. Alexandra is nowhere in sight, yet her scent invades my senses as if she were before me, naked and open. I inhale deeply, licking my lips.

The sun rose above the horizon less than ten minutes ago. There’s a full day ahead before the new moon’s darkness triggers the frenzy. Yet, the base of my spine tingles. Instinct demands its due.

I drop the tools and materials to the floor and ensure the door is unlocked, that she’ll be able to escape without pause—provided I’m able to control my urges long enough for that to happen. I strip out of my clothes, tossing them aside as I go. They’ll be in the way and I’d only tear them off when the time comes. No sense in having to repair them later.

By the time I reach the stairs, my chest is heaving. My unsuspecting mate is within reach, mere seconds away. I want to protect her, but the frenzy has other plans. Better plans. Claim. Mark. Breed.

My feet barely touch the stairs as I go, then I launch myself at the bed. For my mate.
